Nissan stops producing two models in Barcelona but maintains the workforce

The Japanese automobile manufacturing company Nissan has decided to stop producing two models in factory of Zona Franca of Barcelona. From June and July this year, Pulsar and NV200 models for passengers will be finished, respectively. Despite this change, company does not envisage cutting workforce of more than 4,000 employees. In free zone will continue to produce diesel van NV200 and new generation of pick-ups that has recently incorporated for brands Renault, Mercedes Benz and Nissan. In addition, Barcelona plant will be responsible for launching a new electric Series E-NV200 with a view to global export.

The decision to stop producing Pulsar and NV200 models for passengers responds, according to a statement of company, to desire to consolidate ir bet on crossover models (cross between two series) and electric vehicle. The sales of two models manufactured so far in Barcelona plant had fallen in recent times, and unions had already warned in June of a decline in production and a lack of company strategy in Catalan plant.

The production of Pulsar, which began in 2014 in Barcelona, was an investment of 130 million euros. The model, very expensive and difficult to sell, was made in Barcelona but, especially at beginning, pieces came from England. All this enlarged production, which was descending in plant of Free Zone: "From beginning we raised some very high numbers, of 80,000 cars a year, but last production was in 30,000", explains sources of company, that remember that Pulsar, although it worked in Spain, had a lot of competition on a global scale. For all this, multinational has decided to focus on crossover range, in a clear upward trend in Spanish and European markets.

To start producing Pulsar, company had to negotiate an agreement with company committee to lower salary to new hirings. The multinational, in communiqué, tries to reassure workforce, which does not foresee an "immediate" impact: Barcelona plant, says text, "continues focused on its goal of being a high quality and competitive production center, to maximize its Future opportunities. "

This future is marked by electric car. The NV200 for passengers will also cease to occur, but its electric version focuses strategy of Japanese multinational in free zone. With a new 40 KWh battery and an autonomy of 280 kilometers, new electric van aims to be launched on a global scale. The NV200 model of cargo will continue to be produced at Barcelona factory.
