International Women's Day, on 8 March, has a special mobilization this year: women's strike. The initiative is expected to reflect in 177 countries. There was a sort of general essay in 2017, when mass demonstrations were convened, and for this occasion re have been planned stoppages-not only work-which count for first time with support of unions and some parties. Here are some keys to protest:
The keys to manifesto backing citizens
Both leader of citizens in Catalonia, Inés Arrimadas, and national deputy of party Patricia Reyes have publicly indicated that y do not support PAROS. Arrimadas said his party was going to see "What were claims" because, in his opinion, "re are some that are not so clear". "Within se claims, one is against capitalist system," he argued. Reyes added, "Some of us are feminists but not communists."
The manifesto of support for March 8 strike was consensual at a meeting of 400 women held in Zaragoza in January. It is a text with multiple claims that can be consulted here. The conveners call for end of aggression and macho violence, payment of fair pensions, a "public, secular and feminist" education and y add that protest is also against cuts or against corruption, among or ideas. It makes an express reference to capitalism which pointed out Arrimadas: "Wars are product and extension of patriarchy and capitalism for control of territories and of people", one reads. And y add, "we scream very strongly against savage neoliberalism that is imposed as a unique thought worldwide and that destroys our planet and our lives."
Asked about rejection of citizens, one of conveners, just Montero, pointed out following in a recent press conference: "We make very concrete proposals. What is position that raises citizens or ir problem in relation to specific conditions on which y are not pronounced? " For Montero, Arrimadas Party "supports liberal public policies that are leading to precariousness and brutal cuts."What is called and what do y claim?
"We want to show that without us is for world," different feminist groups point out. It is a labor strike, in principle similar to a call for a general strike, but directed only half of population. But not alone. They have also planned a care, student and consumer strike. That is to say, first of all, y ask women not to go to ir jobs that day. They also ask m not to take care of family members who mostly face m-women spend double hours on unpaid work, with 26.5 hours a week to care for children or family, household chores, non-salary collaborations against 14 m--. The third protest is that y do not consume (mainly products taxed with so-called pink rate, like those of feminine hygiene) and that students and teachers do not go to class. Are re precedents?
Last year, feminist groups also called for a strike. But y had no union support. The trade unions supported protest with symbolic stoppages of 15 minutes. The great historical precedent is stoppage that occurred in Iceland on October 24, 1975, a day in which 90% of Icelandic women stopped working and country was paralyzed, causing a turning point in Nordic country.Who is behind initiative?
In Spain, announcement is part of 8m Commission, a platform of feminist organizations that coordinates strike, different activities and demonstrations planned that day. Not consuming, not going to class or not caring for relatives does not require a special coverage or call because it is not formally considered a strike. But y do need, and have obtained in different degrees, support of unions for Labour strike, since plants are only ones enabled to convene m.How long does strike last?
The 8m commission calls for a 24-hour general strike by women alone. CC OO and UGT support only stoppages of two hours per turn, not 24-hour strike, in which y have also included men. "We share that this country is very sexist, but, being first time, we see better fix two hours as a starting gun," said recently to this newspaper Cristina Antoñanzas, responsible for equality of UGT. The CGT has already presented warning of strike, which in its case covers all day and is also widespread, not only for women. Can any worker or workers strike?
"As a general and national call, decision to support or not correspond to each worker, which can be personally added to call with which most identifies," says Jesús Cruz, professor of labour Law at University of Seville. Jesús-Hera, professor of labour Law at Complutense, shares that employees are covered. For his part, Beatriz Quintanilla, professor of labor law of Complutense, has doubts about guarantees: "You can find doctrinal arguments of weight and precedents of general strike in Spain, but in this case conflict that motivates transcends To strictly working environment, so it is very difficult to predetermine at 100% labour effects for those who secunden. "Can women be summoned alone?
The aforementioned Professor Jesús Cruz defends that it was possible to summon only women, despite reluctance of unions that have made a generalized request: "I have no doubt that it is perfectly lawful to do so. It is not discriminatory against men because re is a clear justification: claim is for women. If y want to made visible weight of women in market D job, y must stop m. " Jesus has, for his part, recently showed his doubts about a call for women only: "There is no history and raises doubts. On one hand, I understand that a protest can be delimited only to one parcel, as when you summon only one sector. But at same time, it could be argued that re is discrimination because men cannot participate, "he said.Which matches are second?
Between parties, y support we can and left United. The PSOE supports stoppages of two hours fixed by unions because it considers that "y are those that can stop according to law, a formal stoppage", according to said Secretary of equality of PSOE, Carmen Calvo. His stance differs from that of anor socialist president. The president of Junta de Andalucía, Susana Díaz, has changed date of plenary on 8 March at request of IU. And, for moment, he has left his agenda empty of activity for that day, according to an official spokesman. Citizens and PP do not support it.
