Gilles de Kerchove, European Union (EU) counterterrorism co-ordinator, said thousand 500 people who fought in ranks of terror organization in Syria and Iraq are returning to European countries.

Kerchove, who visited Tunisia as part of his official contacts, met with Ministers of Homeland, defence and Justice of Tunisia, addressing issue of strengning security cooperation on combating terrorism.

"According to EU data, a thousand 500 people who fought in ranks of terror organization in Syria and Iraq returned to European countries," Kerchove said at a press conference in EU building in Tunisia after meeting.

"In order to overcome growing problems due to return of European fighters bound to Deaş," Kerchove stressed that relations between EU and Tunisia are strong, stressing that Europe should take necessary measures to protect border, He added that a strong cooperation was necessary because of similar problems such as extremism and smuggling.
